The World Bank warned that economic development and urbanization would increase the production of solid waste in the next 30 years, 70 percent worldwide.
The report, published by the World Bank, titled “This is what wasted 2.0: Overview of global solid waste management in 2050,” is expected to reach up to 3.4 billion tonnes annually by 2050, reaching 2 billion tonnes annually. Specified.
Noting that 80 percent of the world’s gross product is produced in cities, the report said the cities should be located at the center of Global Solid Waste management.
The report noted that 33 percent of solid waste worldwide were uncovered without any processing, but 13.5 percent of the total waste stock was recycled.
It was emphasized that solid waste was one of the important sources of carbon emissions by burning. In 2016, 5 percent of global carbon emissions were reported to be due to solid waste.
Developed countries, which comprise 16 percent of the world’s population, have been shared with the knowledge that East Asia and the Pacific region, which is caused by 34 percent of solid waste, created 23 percent of the global solid waste volume alone.
The report underlined the importance of establishing sustainable solid waste management, and stressed that uncollected and not properly stacked wastes would have a serious detriment to the environment and human health.
It was also argued that the material resources to be allocated to the management of solid waste could not be compared with the damages that the waste was not managed correctly.
